Leesburg, VA. (May 7th, 2020) – The members of the Loudoun County Democratic Committee voted to support a resolution calling on elected officials to urge Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to immediately release individuals being detained for civil immigration matters.

Loudoun Democrats have been concerned by the immigration policies of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under the Trump administration for years. Now that the U.S. has confirmed over 1.2 million COVID-19 cases, we are concerned about detention centers becoming hotbeds for human rights violations due to the confluence of COVID-19 and shocking practices already in place at ICE detention facilities.

Alarmingly, as of May 7,2020, ICE has reported 753 cases of COVID-19 among detainees out of only 1,528 detainees tested. ICE has discretion to release detainees who aren’t subject to mandatory detention based on the commission of certain crimes or terrorist-related activities and use community-based alternatives to detention. They should use that discretion to avoid needless transmission of COVID-19 and subsequent human rights violations.
