2024 Delegate Selection Process

Important Notice:

Since our current delegation has openings, a process has been opened up to allow more people to apply to join the delegation to the CD10 Democratic Convention this Saturday, May 11, and the State Democratic Convention June 22. The new filing deadline is Thursday, May 9, at midnight. The new filing form is here.

The CD10 Convention is being held this Saturday, May 11, at the Marshall Community Center, 4133-A Rectortown Rd, Marshall VA 20115. Doors open at 11 am. Credentialing is only available from 11 am to Noon. The Convention will convene at 12:30 pm.

The State Convention is being held Saturday, June 22, at The Greater Richmond Convention Center, Grand Ballroom, 403 N 3rd St, Richmond VA 23219. It will convene at 10 am.

In August 2024, Democrats from around the country will meet in Chicago, IL, to select our nominees for President and Vice President of the United States and to adopt our party platform for the next four years. The Convention marks the official transition from primary to general election. Virginia will send 119 National Delegates and 8 Alternates to the Democratic National Convention.

The process for selecting these Delegates and Alternates began with the March 5, 2024, primary. The primary determines how Delegates at the state and national level in Virginia are allocated to presidential candidates. Since Joseph R. Biden, Jr., was the only candidate to meet the 15% threshold in the Tenth Congressional District (CD10), which includes all of Loudoun County, all CD10 delegates will be pledged to Biden.

Democrats who filed to represent Loudoun County at both the CD10 and Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) Conventions have been elected (fewer people filed than we had positions for, so the caucus to elect them was cancelled). The elected State Delegates attend the two conventions in May and June to select National Delegates and Alternates, Presidential Electors (i.e., the people who form the Electoral College for the 2024 election), Democratic National Committee (DNC) Members (DPVA Convention only), and vote on other party business.

To run for District Level National Delegate or Alternate or for the CD10 Presidential Elector position, the filing deadline is 5 PM April 26.

To run for At-Large National Delegate or Alternate or for the two statewide Presidential Elector positions or for DNC Member (petition signatures are required for DNC candidates), the filing deadline is 5 PM May 30.

The filing forms for these positions are on the DPVA webpage linked below.

Please note that all costs of attending a Democratic convention are borne by the attendee.
