What Can I Do?

The news can be really anxiety inducing. Do you want to DO something?

Joining an organization or even just volunteering with one can be a bit overwhelming. Sometimes it's difficult to figure out what you can actually DO.

LCDC just had a whole weekend of volunteering! We set up tables at not one but two events where we engaged with our community to hear about their concerns and also to have some fun!

At the Mosaic Festival in South Riding we even had the kids engaged, learning the democratic process by voting on their favorite ice cream flavors (winner: chocolate)! Volunteers registered voters and let people know about the upcoming primary.

At the Purcellville Music and Arts Festival, the kids enjoyed putting stickers on their plastic fireman hats as we made sure that their adults were registered to vote. One of our volunteers even wore a statue of liberty crown! How fun is that??

On Sunday we got to spend time talking with our favorite candidates for CD10! All twelve candidates participated in our second Speed Dating Candi-date Forum in Leesburg. We also got to see some old new Dem friends from Fairfax and Prince William counties.

None of these events are possible without volunteers! From preparation to execution to post-event activities, there really is something for everyone. Here are all the activities that our volunteers did this weekend:

·       Created social media posts to draw voters to these events

·       Communicated with candidates and their staff via email and phone

·       Coordinated with fellow volunteers

·       Gathered and organized data

·       Made cookies

·       Took a voter registration class

·       Purchased balloons and bottled water

·       Set up canopies, tables, and banners

·       Talked to their members of their communities

·       Pet dogs and gave them treats

·       Provided information about voting and LCDC

·       Danced to music

·       Registered people to vote

·       Checked people in

·       Kept the timer

·       Rang a cowbell

·       Moved around tables and chairs

·       Brainstormed ideas

·       Added contact information to a database

·       Documented lessons learned

·       Took pictures

·       Made new friends

·       Made a difference

As the general election gets closer, we have much more to do! To save our democracy we need volunteers to:

·       Write postcards

·       Analyze and organize data

·       Write letters to the editor

·       Text bank

·       Phone bank

·       Register voters

·       Drop stuff off

·       Pick stuff up

·       Perform data entry

·       Create social media content

·       Attend community meetings

·       Hand out sample ballots

·       Canvass…(don’t worry, you only have to do this if you want to, and we can train you!)

·       Brainstorm ideas

·       Coordinate with campaigns

·       Plan events

·       Walk in parades

·       Do research

·       Attend events

·       Be a precinct captain

·       Create fact sheets

·       Coordinate volunteers

·       Email legislators

·       Update our website

·       Make new friends

·       Have fun!
