LCDC Condemns Youngkin’s 15-Week Abortion Ban Proposal
The Loudoun County Democratic Committee opposes Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s cynical efforts to win political points nationally with his proposed two-year budget plan that includes funding to enforce an abortion ban here in Virginia.
On Friday, Youngkin sought to keep pace with his fellow Republican White House aspirants by submitting a budget plan that would criminalize abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, mimicking similar bans in Arizona and Florida.
We stand with the statement of Sen. L. Louise Lucas, Democrat of Portsmouth, “This governor is purely delusional if he thinks for one friggin’ minute that we’re going to allow him to put women and doctors in jail for violating his 15-week abortion ban.” Lucas, president pro tempore of the state Senate, added: “I will fight day and night to make sure it crashes and burns.”
Democrats hold a narrow 21-19 state Senate majority; however, Democratic Sen. Joseph Morrissey of Richmond has indicated his opposition to most forms of abortion. A 20-20 tie on any vote enables Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle Sears to cast the deciding vote in support of Youngkin’s plan.
Loudoun County Democratic Committee Acting Chair Avram Fechter said, “We need to ensure that Loudoun County sends Democrats to the House of Delegates and State Senate in 2023 so we can continue to vote down these attempts to restrict access to health care for women in Virginia.”
