LCDC Praises Recent Vote for Collective Bargaining in LCPS
After a three-year process, collective bargaining has finally arrived for Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) with the recent vote in favor by the Loudoun County School Board.
The Labor Committee of the Loudoun County Democratic Committee (LCDC) applauds this move which permits the Loudoun Education Association (LEA) to hold an election to become the collective bargaining representative for the Loudoun County Public School system. Following in the footsteps of Fairfax and Prince William Counties Schools, Loudoun Firefighters (IAFF 3756), and Loudoun County Employees (Service Employees International Union, SEIU 512), public school workers in Loudoun will now be able to negotiate wages, benefits, and working conditions.
Workers in Virginia are recognizing the importance of having a say in their workplace.
“This is an historic moment. It's more than just wages, it’s a voice at the table and to be a partner in making Loudoun Schools the best in the country. And the best way to do this is to join the LEA,” states Bob Moses, the chair of LCDC’s Labor Committee.
Studies have shown that supported, engaged, and cultivated teachers lead to supported, engaged, and cultivated students. Smaller class size, access to needed resources, and updated school facilities are some of the amazing outcomes that are in store for LCPS.
It's important to note that Virginia is a right-to-work state, where union membership is voluntary and public workers do not have the right to strike.
LCDC remains committed to continuing our fight for workers’ rights. We are grateful to LEA and everyone whose steadfast support of our educators led to this moment.
