Loudoun Democrats Score Near Sweep over GOP

Loudoun County Democrats went into Election Day feeling confident and have emerged victorious, making a clean sweep of every race – except one that remains too close to call – by the end of the day Tuesday.

From Congress to municipal races and even at the deeply controversial School Board level, it was clear that voters trust Democrats over their GOP rivals as honest defenders of democracy and the wishes of the people.

“We are elated by our Loudoun victories yet remain deeply concerned about the balance of power in America going forward,” said Lissa Savaglio, Chair of the Loudoun County Democrats. “We intend to redouble our efforts to fight for democratic values and claim an even larger Democratic sweep in 2023.”

We remain devoted to having every eligible voter exercise their fundamental right to vote and remain confident that our electoral system will count every legitimate vote.

Races called in favor of Democrats on Tuesday night:

  •  Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton convincingly beat her GOP opponent Hung Cao. With 93% of the vote counted, Wexton led by 5 percent in a race called in her favor early Tuesday night.

  • Democrats swept Leesburg races with Mayor Kelly Burk easily winning re-election, Councilman Neil Steinberg returning for a second term and Todd Camino-Johnson taking an open seat.

  • School Board candidate Erika Ogedegbe, of Leesburg, overcame two challengers to win her first term to elective office with a 9-point advantage.

Only one Loudoun race remained undecided late Tuesday: in Broad Run, Democratic candidate for School Board Nick Gothard narrowly trailed by 0.9%.

While Democrats didn’t endorse a candidate in the Purcellville "nonpartisan" mayoral race, the county GOP did endorse Joe Grewe, who lost by more than 11 points – an embarrassment for a candidate with strong conservative credentials in a heavily conservative town.

Those on the right have told Loudoun voters repeatedly that the county and its schools have been moving in the wrong direction, yet county residents came out in force this Election Day to say they disagree, that they support democratic values, which include equity, a woman’s right to choose and respect for all.
