State of the Union: Democracy Will Prevail, Families Will Prosper
We stand in praise of President Biden for defending and advancing democratic values at home and abroad in his first State of the Union Address, Tuesday night.
With the world’s attention riveted by Vladimir Putin’s cruel, unprovoked war on Ukraine, Biden declared that the would-be czar severely miscalculated the world community’s resolute opposition as well as Ukrainians’ willingness to fight for freedom and democracy. “Putin was wrong, we were ready,” Biden proclaimed. He called on Congress to provide more armaments and humanitarian aid for Ukraine: “when dictators do not pay a price for their aggression… the costs and threats to America and the world keep rising.”
The Biden administration rallied NATO and the European Union from the weakened state Donald Trump sought to impose, delivering financial, humanitarian, and military aid to beleaguered Ukraine, while imposing historic sanctions against Putin’s Russia and insisting that “democracy will prevail.”
At home, Biden championed lower costs for working families amid an international inflationary spiral arising from global supply chain issues. He called for a $15 an hour minimum wage, clean-energy tax credits, and programs aiding child care, elder care and prescription drugs, while touting a 40-year record of explosive economic growth and a $1 trillion investment in national infrastructure.
He also asked Congress to engage in a bipartisan effort to enact measures to prevent and treat opioid addiction and to create an Advanced Research Project Agency for Health charged with developing breakthrough treatments for cancer and Alzheimer's disease. This is the leadership America needs and has been waiting for.
“This is what leadership at home and abroad looks like,” said Lissa Savaglio, Chair of the Loudoun County Democratic Committee. “We couldn’t be more proud.”
