We Are All Ukraine

We are awe-struck by the Ukrainian people’s bravery, love of country, and passionate defense of democracy.

While it is not our practice at the Loudoun County Democratic Committee to weigh in on international matters, we have been so deeply moved by events and images of recent days that we want to express our deep respect and support for the people of Ukraine.

Their taking to arms in a cause we, too, hold so dear makes us want to declare: We Are All Ukraine.

Yet this all leads us to wonder: what would we do? If faced with this kind of existential assault on our democracy, would we find the fortitude to stand in defense of our nation and values as Ukrainians are today?

Make no mistake: this is a war against democratic ideals and freedom of spirit. Ukrainians battle an enemy in an unprovoked war they did not create, instigated in madness by a dictator who seeks to undo Ukrainian democracy.

We, too, are familiar with the anti-democratic politics of lies, dissembling, and disinformation.

Donald Trump says that Putin--the man who would be a 21st century Czar--is “genius," Trump’s minions applaud approval, declaring Ukraine no concern of ours. They are wrong on so many levels that we don’t need to explain and won’t dignify those hideous notions with a response.
